Watchmen: The End is Nigh
Watchmen, it is one of the most famous comic books in history. When it was released back in 1986, it wasn’t a cult-phenomenon but over the coming years, it became more popular then DC Comics could ever imagine. Only twelve issues were ever released but still to this day it’s beloved by millions and still influences comic books. Just recently it was revealed that Dr. Manhattan, the most compelling character in the Watchmen universe is actually the creator of the DC Universe. This means Dr. Manhattan is the father to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Cyborg, the Joker and many others. Back in 2009, a film adaptation of the original Watchmen comic was released to the public. Today it still stands as one of the best comic book film adaptations, if not the best. Coinciding with the release of the film was “Watchmen: The End is Nigh”, a prequel story for both the film and comic book.
Nite Owl and Rorschach
The game stared Nite Owl and Rorschach, the two vigilantes who often referenced their past crime fighting in both the comic and the film. This video game goes beyond the film & the comic book, delving down into this characters more than it ever had been done before. The rivalries created through this game still echo throughout the comic book community. There are two parts to this game, both of which take place a decade before the events of the film. Players have serious choices to make in the game that will define fighting styles, special power-ups and new locations throughout the game. Rorschach plays the best out of the two, taking on multiple enemies at once while Nite Owl focuses on taking out one enemy at a time. Players could use local co-op in order to play as both characters, this gave more emphasis on what many reviewers said to be outstanding gameplay.
The plot of the game is what fans of the series came for while playing this game. In part one players are taken to 1977 right after the Keene Act was passed, Nite Owl & Rorschach head over to a local prison upon hearing that a riot has erupted. Players are sent through a dazzling mystery that has crime bosses killed, reported murdered and a powerful secret revealed. That secret behind that The Comedian was behind their trails and tribulations behind the game in order to cover up his involvement in two scandals.
The Second Entry
The second entry into the series wasn’t taken as well as the first in terms of its plot. Players find a woman named Violet Greene who has been kidnapped, upon going to a strip club to find her they find the kidnapper as well who is “The Twilight Lady”, an old romantic partner of Nite Owls. This woman reveals that Violet enjoys being a prostitute and is here on her own free will. Rorschach disagrees which causes for him to leave the scene, only to then return through a skylight and kill the Twilight Lady. This causes for Nite Owl & Rorschach to end their partnership. Rorschach teamed up with the Comedian for a few years while Nite Owl is hung up his cape. This was the end of the game which leads many disappointed.
None the less this game was taken to critical acclaim by video game enthusiasts and fans of the series. It added more lore to the story line and provided simplistic gameplay.
